How many times have you gotten a ticket… or something equally costly or annoying… while trying to do someone a favor? Jack White drove from Jax down to my house in Orlando (but I had to drive to the nearest toll booth to bring him a quarter because it is “exact change only” and he was 3 cents short.) No FINE$ please.
From my place I drove us down to the Lauderdale area to look at the property where the new rec course will be. The Google maps we looked at prior to the visit lead us to believe that the area would be dozed and easy to get around. Uh, no. High sawgrasses and insidious “monkey balls” surrounded our premo areas. My socks filled up with monkey balls and my shins filled up with micro-cuts.
About 2/3 of the natural oaks in this park will be OB because they will be in a designated wetland area. There seem to be 4 kinds of trees in the equation;
Trees that are already there and will stay there.
Trees that are already there but will not stay there.
Trees that are not already there but will be planted.
And trees that have recently been relocated there and may or may not survive.
The real problem, at the moment, is that we’re not 100% certain in which category some of the trees belong.
We were accompanied by a member of the landscape architectural firm that is designing the park. He had a fairly limited amount of time to wander around. The high grasses and monkey balls made it tough to get to all of the vantage points I wanted to view in the time that we had.
Designing from the ground up with some grade changes and planned plantings certainly changes the way I’ll approach this project.
Looks like I’ll sign up for the Miami tourney in a couple of weeks and go back down there to see if what I have on paper jibes with the actual lay of the land.
Tomorrow: Meeting at noon with S.C.O.R.E. to assist with some biz start up things and a biz plan.
